Engagement Letters: Scope Clauses Controllers Overlook
The engagement letter is more than a fee page. Scope schedules define whether component auditors are used, how related-party procedures are bounded, and which report users are intended.
Controllers often skim past the timetable appendix. That appendix is where draft report dates, inventory observation windows, and management representation letter deadlines live. Miss those and the opinion date slips—even if fieldwork felt complete.
Independence clauses matter when you also want advisory help on systems or tax. Ask early whether a requested side project would impair the audit; it is cheaper than unwinding a conflict mid-season.
Bring the letter to your internal kick-off with process owners. When warehouse leads know observation week is contractual, scheduling resistance drops.
