Inventory Count Observation: What Controllers Should Prepare
Inventory observation is still one of the most physical parts of financial auditing. On count day, auditors need controlled tags, a cut-off sheet for goods moving in and out, and a floor map that matches the ledger locations.
Warehouse teams in Shiga plants often run parallel production. Pause movements in the observed zones, or log every transfer with a counter-signature. Unlogged forklift moves are the fastest way to create reconciliation differences that take days to clear.
Prepare a list of slow-moving and consignment stock in advance. Observers will sample existence and condition; they are not there to revalue every SKU, but damaged cartons and expired lots will be noted if they sit in “good stock” bins.
After the count, provide the roll-forward to year-end quickly. The observation supports existence at count date; cut-off testing ties movements between count and balance-sheet date.
